Three tips for brushing teeth with braces

Brushing with braces

If you were recently fitted with braces, you might be wondering how this will affect your usual dental care routine. Brushing around these metal devices can be tricky, but it’s important to keep up with removing plaque and harmful bacteria to protect your smile. Here are three tips for brushing teeth with braces.

1. Prepare your braces

OralB.com notes that the first thing you should do before brushing is to prep your braces. This means taking off your elastics as well as any other parts of the braces that can be detached. This will make it much easier to get your toothbrush into areas that are hard to reach.

2. Angle of brushing

In order to properly clean around your braces, you should make sure to keep your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle between your gums and teeth. This will allow you to reach the area where you teeth meet your braces in order to remove as much plaque as possible, notes ColgateProfessional.com.

3. Brush after every meal

Ideally, you should be brushing after every meal anyway, but this is especially important with braces, reports BracesGuide.com. Food can easily become stuck in and around your braces, and regular brushing will ensure that they are removed before they can stain or harm your teeth in any way.
