Is It Time to Remove Your Wisdom Teeth?

dca-blog_tooth-extraction-female-patient

Your wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25, which is known as the “age of wisdom.” Unfortunately, your third molars don’t necessarily make you smarter. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but it’s possible to have more. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, about 90 percent of people have one or more wisdom teeth that are impacted or trapped inside the jaw. Impacted wisdom teeth don’t have room to erupt normally, and this can cause problems. Ignoring your wisdom teeth is not a good idea. Wisdom teeth removal can prevent future problems like tooth decay, cyst, or tumor formation and other complications associated with impacted molars.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Why It’s a Good Idea

Prehistoric humans needed their wisdom teeth for chewing raw meat and tough plants. They had bigger jaws and could accommodate a few extra teeth. Our modern jaw size, along with improved dental health, makes it less likely for our extra molars to serve as functional teeth. You may not know that you have wisdom teeth. Most people never have any signs or symptoms. When they do, they experience problems like pain, swelling, and changes in jaw mobility. Symptoms usually indicate that the teeth should be removed. Many experts recommend extraction before the age of 30 to avoid complications.

Wisdom Teeth Removal: What to Expect

You may be given the choice between general or local anesthesia. If your surgery is complicated, or you don’t want to be awake, general anesthesia may be the best option. After the surgery, you may experience some pain, but your surgeon will provide pain medication. You’ll probably have some facial swelling and bruising for several days. Some bleeding is also normal. You can bite on a piece of gauze or a moist tea bag to help reduce it. Eat a soft or liquid diet while you recover, but don’t use a straw; this can disturb the newly formed blood clots. You can brush your teeth, but be very gentle. Depending on your pain level and condition, you can usually return to work or school within a few days. If you experience any unusual symptoms during recovery, contact your oral surgeon or dentist in Orange City.
